MRM seminar in Manila, 15 March 2010
Representatives of the shipping/training community in the Philippines are cordially invited to a free of charge MRM information seminar on Monday 15 March 2010 at Casa Marinero, Intramuros, Manila.
Maritime Resource Management (MRM) is a further development of the original Bridge Resource Management course that was launched in the shipping industry in the early 1990s. Together with the SAS Flight Academy and six other major maritime organisations, The Swedish Club converted a successful aviation training programme to a course tailored for the maritime industry. The objective with MRM training is to establish genuine safety cultures in shipping companies, onboard and ashore, with the ultimate aim of combating human errors in accidents at sea.
In 2008, a break-through for MRM training was achieved. Contributing factors to this development were the emerging evidence of successful results following training together with the IMO's decision to make resource management training a high-priority issue in the current revision of the STCW Code and Convention. In January 2010, the STW Sub-Committee decided to make resource management a mandatory training requirement in the revised STCW Code and Convention. The work will be finalised at the Diplomatic Conference in the Philippines in June 2010.
Seminar topics
The new STCW requirements deal with "assertiveness training" and "situation awareness". What this really means and how this can be trained, will be presented and discussed at the seminar.
Other topics addressed at the seminar are:
* Background to MRM
* Reasons we have failed so far
* Contributing factors in accidents
* The new view on human error
* Culture's impact on teamwork and errors. We will put a special focus on the issue of "power distance", most important for the Filipino seafarer.
Target groups
The target groups for the meeting are top management representatives and those who are responsible for and deal with safety, recruitment and training issues of seafarers and work for training providers, manning agencies, ship owners, ship managers or any other relevant organisation in the shipping industry. (Please note that a similar seminar was held at Softitel Philippine Plaza Hotel on 6 November 2009 and we would be especially pleased to see those who could not attend then.)
As a follow-up to the seminar, we will also offer a special training day in Manila for new MRM Workshop Leaders. This event will take place on Friday 19 March 2010. More details here.
Registration
Please register for the seminar using the registration form below. Please note that seats are limited and first come, first served terms apply. We would therefore much appreciate if companies could limit their attendance to one or maximum a few participants per company.
