Mariner Attitude Survey

The Mariner Attitude Survey (MAS) is a new safety and efficiency initiative that will be carried out on a worldwide scale involving MRM training providers, shipping companies and other interested parties in the shipping industry.

The main objectives with the Mariner Attitude Survey are:

  • To provide shipping companies with information about the attitudes and views of their mariners in areas related to the company itself, the work place, safety, training, leadership, teamwork, work practices and related issues.
  • To provide shipping companies with the opportunity to benchmark this data with other companies.
  • To provide useful feedback for further development of the MRM training programme.
  • To offer an opportunity to provide feedback of the survey to the shipping industry as a whole.

The overall objective is to identify improvement opportunities with the purpose of making shipping safer, companies more efficient and the seagoing career an attractive and stimulating choice.

The data of the Mariner Attitude Survey will be stored on web servers belonging to the marine insurer The Swedish Club for maximum security and protection of the data. However, it is The Swedish Club Academy AB that will be the administrator and the owner of the data.

Recommended procedure for companies/training providers that wish to get involved:

1. Discuss thoroughly within the company to involve all relevant people and ensure commitment.

2. Open the MAS Confidentiality Agreement (below), fill out the forms "Name", "Title/Position" and "Company" in the pdf-document. Print, sign and state place and date. Fax or email the signed document to Martin Hernqvist at The Swedish Club Academy AB and a copy signed by us will be returned. Who signs on behalf of the counterpart is less important.

3. Nominate a contact person whose primary task will be to reach out to and involve the mariners.

4. The Mariner Attitude Survey is accessed from http://www.swedishclub.com/mas/ and each mariner will need an individual password to get access to the survey.

5. The contact person may now require from The Swedish Club Academy a number of unique passwords for further distribution, one by one, to each mariner the company wishes to involve in the survey. This set of passwords will be linked to the company enabling company specific feedback and benchmarking analyses. Should the company need more passwords, this can be arranged. The passwords will be distributed to the contact person in an Excel-file.

6. The last step will be feedback and analysis of data.

To obtain as unbiased comments as possible from the mariners we strongly recommend that you avoid relating the survey to MRM and that you involve mariners in the survey, as far as possible, prior to their MRM training.

It is our intention to offer participation in the Mariner Attitude Survey, and feedback from it, free of charge during 2010 for all licensed MRM training providers.

Please contact us as soon as possible if you wish to get involved.
