There has recently been an escalation of events between the Argentine and British governments in relation to Malvinas/Falkland islands dispute.

Lately the local stevedores union (SOMU)  under the umbrella of the Argentine Confederation of Transport Workers (CATT) decided to delay the transit of a bulk carrier, a chemical and a container ship. The measure consisted in delaying the tug services for six hours on arrival of ships and six hours for the sailing from local ports as announced by CATT in respect of vessels flying British flag as an unions’ response to reports by which the British Government is militarizing the South Atlantic Area. They have delayed a bulk carrier flying Panamanian flag, a chemical tanker flying Singapore flag (but owned by a Norwegian Owner)  and a container ship operated by a Danish owner.

None of the cases the unions’ boycotted British interests but with these measures, what the unions are really doing is prejudicing the Argentine commerce and delaying ships with other flags.

In accordance with the head of SOMU, the objective of the protest is to press different ship owners for them, in turn, to force in some way British Government to open the dialogue with the Argentine Authorities.

The Secretary of Industry has manifested his worries about the steps being taken by the unions against ships which would appear to arrive from the UK.

As you will note this boycott does not have any sense and no pattern so it could affect any ship no matter which flag is flying.
