Considering the costly consequences for ship owners and their hull insurers due to main engine breakdowns, it is important to identify the main causes of this damage and examine how these can be prevented.

Lubrication oil related failure is the most common cause of damage and the most expensive type is on crank shaft/bearings, according to statistics from more then 1200 Hull & Machinery claims cases.
