Why do navigational accidents happen when the pilot is on board? The Club sees a recurring problem: the pilot has not been integrated efficiently into the bridge team.
About 68% of all collisions happen in or close to the port, where it is common that a pilot is on board. If the pilot is not included in the bridge team and the pilot’s plan is not discussed and agreed, the pilot will operate alone. Therefore, it is essential that the Master’s expectations and the plan is discussed during the pilot briefing.
