GPS Interference – Eastern/Central Mediterranean Sea and Suez Canal
1 October – The United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) has issued revised advisory as follows; Multiple instances of significant GPS interference have been reported by vessels operating in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean Sea.

MSS Case October: Serious injury during mooring operation
2 October – In the Monthly Safety Scenario Case of October, a new AB is seriously injured during a mooring operation. Lack of communication and no pre-departure briefing were contributing factors to this accident.

Fire risks: Hot work and smoking
4 Ocotber – When doing hot work such as welding the risk of fire increases and the job calls for careful preparations. Our Loss Prevention team has together with experts from Burgoynes highlighted some cases when cargo fires occurred.

10 October – Latest questions on US sanctions following shipping of Iranian oil and petroleum products contrary to U.S. sanctions.

US Coast Guard issue Ebola virus guidance
14 October – Vessel owners/operators should be alert to the possibility that persons whose travel originated in Tanzania could potentially have been exposed to Ebola virus disease (EVD).

Gulf of Guinea hot spot in latest IMB Piracy report
15 October- Maritime piracy incidents down in Q3 but Gulf of Guinea remains a hot spot according to the International Maritime Bureau, IMB. 

Focus: Weathertightness
17 October – Wet damage on cargo is the most costly claim on bulk carriers with an average cost of almost USD 110 000 (2017). Working with weathertightness of hatch covers and sealing systems is a key factor to avoid wet damage.

Fire risks: Cargo hold lights
31 October – Fixed cargo lights can cause fire or explosions on combustible cargoes such as grain, animal feed, wood chips, pulp and paper. If the light is too close to the cargo, there is a risk of ignition.
