New requirements for ballast water management (BWM)

INTERCARGO has provided us with the following information.

IMO just published a circular BWM.2/Circ.59 as attached, informing that Australia introduced new requirements for ballast water management (BWM) on ships engaged in international voyages, effective from 16 Jun 2016.

From 16 Jun, 2016, Australia will accept the use of BWM System (BWMS) which received Type Approval through IMO process. Ships which use BWMS will need to carry an approved BWM Plan and be surveyed and issued with a BWM Certificate in according with the BWM Convention requirements.

Under the new requirements, ballast water exchange must take place outside 12nm from the nearest land and will not be permitted within 12 nm of the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef or part of the Torres Strait.
