100 years of P&I
A sign of history & future
In 2010 we are celebrating “100 years of P&I” and by that we can proudly look into a bright future for the company, our members and our staff. This seal is a sign of that.

But we are nothing without our history.
It all started in 1872 when we signed a Hull & Machinery policy for the recently-built steamship Orvar Odd. Already at that time we were a mutual insurance company, which still is the foundation for everything we do today.
38 years later – in 1910 – the demand for insurance to provide protection against personal injury, death and collision liabilities was rapidly increasing among Swedish shipping companies. So the Board, together with the well-known shipowner Dan Broström and our managing director Einar Lange, decided that we should make the move into the world of Protection & Indemnity. That proved to be one of the most important decisions in our history.
The first to join up was the steamship Håkan, and there has been a great deal of vessels since then. Today our business focus is turning more and more towards writing Protection & Indemnity but we are still the mutual company dedicated to Hull & Machinery – and of course our members.
