Seafarer Wellbeing

At The Swedish Club, seafarer wellbeing is at the heart of safe and sustainable shipping

We believe that supporting people at sea starts long before a voyage begins and continues throughout every stage of their journey.

Our initiatives focus on both the human and physical aspects of wellbeing — from strengthening psychological safety and family support through Check Your Pulse, to ensuring fitness for duty through our enhanced Pre-Employment Medical Examination (PEME) programme.

Together, these efforts help create safer vessels, healthier crews, and a more resilient maritime industry.

Check your pulse

Here, you’ll find all our Check Your Pulse resources, developed to promote psychological safety, nurture a supportive onboard culture, and strengthen the human connections that keep our industry moving.

Created to support seafaring families, the story gently explores themes of connection, distance, and love, reminding every child that no matter how far the ocean stretches, family bonds remain strong. This book is part of The Swedish Club’s Check Your Pulse initiative, supporting wellbeing through inclusion, empathy, and storytelling.

Our Family and the Sea – Family guide

This Family Guide was created together with Mental Health Support Solutions to help bridge the distance between ship and shore. It offers insights into the seafaring life and practical tips for staying connected, so that both crew and their families feel informed, supported, and united no matter how many miles are in between.

Pre-Employment Medical Examination (PEME)

Ensuring the fitness of crew members is crucial for the safe vessel operations

The Swedish Club enhanced PEME programme has been in place since 2010. As of 2024, we have partnered with Marine Advisory Medical Service, who will oversee the administration of this program.
