In 2007 the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) completed a study which identified that international shipping emitted 2.7% of the world’s man-made emissions. The majority of these emissions came from ships’ funnels. They elected to take action to reduce emissions through the development and implementation of a program of legislation under MARPOL Annex VI.
