The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) issued a Notice advising mariners on results of a recent study on the status and accuracy of GPS. While GPS was found to be highly accurate in the vast majority of circumstances, errors are possible. Newer GPS receivers offer an indication of the integrity of positional information, but not older receivers. Older GPS receivers should not be interfaced with devices like AIS and ECDIS. Also, GPS uses the WGS-84 geodetic datum. Many charts use a different datum, some of which are not convertible. DGPS, where available, compensates for various GPS issues. Mariners should not rely solely on GPS to ascertain their position. Marine Notice 11/2005 (https://www.amsa.gov.au/Shipping_Safety/Marine_Notices/2005/documents/1105.pdf) (11/11/05).
