For the sake of good order please find attached hereto a letter issued by the Argentine Naval Hydrographic Service in respect of charts used by foreign vessels calling to ports in the River Parana (Rio Parana). In recent groundings we have also noted that vessels have onboard the British Admiralty charts which in fact have a warning stating “that the chart is intended for general reference only so Argentinean charts must be used”.
Some cases have taken place at different port roads in the River Parana were the British Admiralty charts were not reflecting the accurate depth of water at the place where the vessel anchored with the subsequent grounding of the ship.
Therefore and based on the above and taking into account the letter from the Naval Authority we would suggest that your Members ensure the use of the correct Argentinean chart when vessels are sailing in the river waterway between the ports of Santa Fe and the River Plate.
