Slow Steaming Practices in the Global Shipping Industry

MAN Diesel & Turbo has provide us with results of a survey conducted by MAN PrimeServ in late 2011 among representatives of the global container, bulk and tanker shipping industry.

In late 2011 and early 2012 MAN PrimeServ conducted a survey on Slow Steaming Practices in the global container and tanker shipping industry. The survey provided many important insights into how the global shipping industry adapts engines and equipment to a lower engine load.

Three main findings

  • In addition to fuel savings, the main reasons for slow steaming were optimizing utilization of capacity and avoiding idling costs
  • Most respondents who had implemented retrofits had achieved the expected extra cost savings or more
  • Retrofits make an important contribution to environmental compliance while slow steaming
