Coordinadora de Trabajadores del Mar, the largest stevedore union representing most of the country’s stevedores in Spain, has issued a notice of strike in all Spanish ports for the 4,5,6 and 7 October from 08:00 hrs. LT on 4 October to 08:00hrs. LT on 7 October, as a measure of protest against the draft of the Law of Maritime Navigation (see our Stop Press Advice of 04.03.05), which Spanish socialist government plans to agree and approve within the present legislature, as well as a measure of pressure against the draft of the European Directive on Ports Services. Smaller regional unions have also signed up.
If an agreement is not reached in Madrid on Thursday 29 September 2005, the ports traffic will therefore be paralysed and only the minimum services will be operative.
Unlike the notice of strike of June this year, which was finally suspended, the announced strike will probably not be suspended as an agreement with Madrid seems unlikely. It should therefore be checked how this notice of strike will affect each different Spanish port and which dates the strike will take place, if not all of them.
