Cargo wet damage on bulk carriers is a recurring problem. Over 34% of all insured bulk carriers suffered a cargo claim in 2017 and this is an increase of 75% since 2014.

Heavy weather and leaking hatch covers are both the most common and the most costly type of wet damage claim. These are often coinciding incidents as the cargo hatch covers may be washed over by green sea on deck when the vessel sails through heavy weather.

It is important to note that the main concern is not the heavy weather itself, but rather that incorrectly applied, and poorly maintained cargo hatch covers and sealing systems significantly increases the risk of the cargo becoming damaged by water.
