Monthly fraud and crime update from IMB
3 January – The situation in Yemen is affecting trading parties as ports in certain areas in the country are not operational. Aden, Mukalla, Nishtun and Ras Isa Oil Terminal is open. Hodeidah, Salef, Mokha, Ras Isa Marine terminal (FSO), Ras Isa petroleum products reception facility and Balhaf LNG Terminal is closed.

Yemen update
23 January – Latest update regarding the situation in Yemen: The ports of Hodeidah and Saleef will remain open to aid and commercial shipping for another thirty days.

The monthly publication MARS, from The International Journal of The Nautical Institute, is a confidential reporting scheme by the mariners to protect the mariner. The scheme supports risk assessment and offers a free, searchable database of accidents and near misses.

Auxiliary Engine Damage StudyMajority of Auxiliary Engine Damage occurs due to human error warns The Swedish Club
8 January – An investigation by The Swedish Club into auxiliary engine damage has revealed that the majority of all damage takes place immediately after maintenance work. The report also finds that container vessels have a significantly higher claims frequency due to the larger number of installed engines on these vessels. Vote of confidence for The Swedish Club as S&P revises outlook to positive
26 January – S&P Global Ratings (S&P) revised its outlook on The Swedish Club to positive from stable. It also affirmed its ‘BBB+’ long-term insurer financial strength and issuer credit ratings for the Club.

12 January – The International Group of P&I Clubs (IG Clubs) and the shipping line members of the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS) have issued a revised version 3.0 of the Guidelines for the Carriage of Calcium Hypochlorite in Containers.

Maritime Labour Convention 2006 As Amended (MLC) – Liability for Uninsured MLC Liabilities
25 January – As Members will be aware from the Club’s Circulars of 22 June and 7 October 2016 concerning the implementation of financial certification requirements in accordance with the amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (“MLC”), the Boards of all International Group Clubs agreed that Clubs would provide the necessary certification.

30 January – Europe’s P&I clubs have issued their first Solvency and Financial Condition Reports (SFCR) and, with cover of 232%, The Swedish Club delivered an excellent set of results, taking third place among the clubs in terms of available capital compared to the Solvency II requirement.
