Yemen: Port Situation

Gulf Agency Co Ltd, our correspondents in Yemen, has provided us with the following information:

We have just received some first-hand information on the situation in Yemen from one of the surveyors who has returned back to Hodeidah and we thought it may be useful for us to share this.

Situation in Hodeidah and Aden is still tense. There is severe electricity shortage in Hodeidah since mid-2015 and people who are able to spend money are using generators as well as solar power. The situation has become tense since a suicide attack on a Saudi war ship by rebels who were controlling Hodeidah while it was on patrol west of Hodeidah port recently. There have been few air strikes in Hodeidah port which destroyed radar station after the above incident. Currently Hodeidah, Saleef, Aden and Mukalla ports are working normally. All gantry cranes and warehouses have been destroyed by air strikes in Hodeidah port. Vessels calling at Yemeni ports still will only be allowed to enter Yemeni territorial waters following an inspection by the Saudi Arabian coalition forces.

Aden is experiencing a complete black out and power cut since Sunday afternoon 19th Feb.  Fuel supplies for domestic use has stopped a week earlier.
