CINS operational guidance November 2026
CINS has published new operational guidance addressing the carriage of lithium-ion batteries shipped under IMDG Code Special Provision 188 (SP188). Drawing on experience from container fire incidents and input from carriers, terminal operators and shore-based firefighting specialists, the guidance highlights practical measures to improve cargo visibility, risk-informed stowage planning and emergency preparedness. Its central message is that while SP188 provides regulatory relief for qualifying lithium-ion batteries, this should not result in the cargo becoming operationally invisible throughout the maritime transport chain.
